Unique piece, this statuette represents life in rural Minho (the Cradle of Portugal), combining vibrant primary colors, feminine ornaments such as hats and earrings, and daily concerns of women like flowers, chickens, fish, eggs...

The Boneca Minhota (Doll from Minho, in Northern Portugal) is the most authentic expression of Julia Côta's personal and creative universe. She shapes clay naively, representing what she sees around her.

More informations ?

Júlia Côta is now one of the greatest living representatives of "Barcelos Figurado," an artistic movement that is an expression of Portuguese popular culture. She is the granddaughter of João Domingos Côta da Rocha, recognized as the father of the Portuguese icon: the Galo de Barcelos (Barcelos Rooster), who initiated her into the art of clay modeling at the age of 9.

Today, at nearly 85 years old, Júlia is a recognized artist, welcomed with honors at each of her appearances and visited, like an icon, by artists from around the world who come to her small house in Barcelos, a street that now bears her name.

Her works are now part of private collections, sold worldwide, and are sometimes gathered for temporary exhibitions or retrospectives. But Júlia has retained all her simplicity, is always amazed at the honors she receives, and continues to mold clay in her small house, passing on her skills to her daughter, Prazeres.
